Offering a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese design, the hotel embraces a typical courtyard house configuration. The development comprises two L-shaped towers which read as separate halves of a whole; containing approximately 140 guestrooms, the buildings have different heights and functions – the taller of the two contains the hotel, while the smaller building houses serviced apartments. A Qing Dynasty heritage building, located at the corner of the site, has been retained and beautifully restored to form a unique entrance lobby.
정확히 어느 부분이 트리거가 되었는지는 모르겠다. 여기저기 조금씩…점점 차오르는 감정이 조금씩 스며나오는데 일곱의 사람 앞에서 나는 그것을 감추지 못해 어쩔 줄을 몰라했다. 지나고 나서 매번 느끼는 거지만 나는 진짜 맨얼굴이 드러나려 할 때마다 절실하게 홀린 듯한 느낌이다. 안돼 나오지마 하는데 온 정신을 빼앗긴 느낌. 감정을 들키는 순간, 주변의 모든 것이 빠르게 들어왔다 순식간에 지나가는 경험. 오른쪽 옆 나를 바라보는 시선 하나. 내 앞에 걱정스런 얼굴의 표정 하나. 고개를 끄덕이며 동조해주는 이 또 하나. 그 시선들. 그 사이 나는 볼 안쪽을 깨물며 여유있는 척 웃음을 지어본다. 그러면 뭐해. 이미 펑 하니 터져서 모두가 우는 나를 보고 말았는 걸.
We got our hands on some free recycled panels of acrylic glass, which was perfect, because my mini-greenhouse needed a new, more permanent roof: I’ll soon be insulating it, and converting it into a permanent home for dwarf citrus, olive, and pomegranate trees to live in year-round.
He cut the large panels by making a series of deep grooves, then snapping the panel along the weakened line on the edge of the table. He then sanded the edges.
The acrylic panels are attached to the wooden frame of the hinged roof with screws, using the plastic parts of roofing nails as a barrier, and to allow for some “give” between the head of the screw and the panel.
Everything ends up covered in algae here, so it is important that the wood is sealed with varnish or paint, especially when there are close joints between plastic/glass and wood, where water can collect.
This project was completed in stages, but accomplished with very few significant costs. The biggest expenses were the real glass panels, and the fixtures (screws, hinges, etc.). Otherwise, things like the timber, paint, and acrylic panels were acquired second-hand.
